Richard Sutphen (pronounced “Sut-fen”) attended Art Center School in Los Angeles and has been awarded “Best of Show” in fine-art group shows as diverse as The Society of Illustrators in New York City and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts “Rose Fete.” For 18 years, he worked as an art director for major advertising agencies and as director of his own design/illustration studio. As an advertising designer he won 150 awards in national and regional shows.

Writing / Publishing

When his design studio launched a successful art-book publishing division, Richard had little time left for painting. You Were Born Again To Be Together, his book on reincarnation and relationships (Simon & Schuster Pocket Books), became a bestseller. Six more Sutphen books were subsequently published by Pocket Books. In the years that followed, he created and published more books and hundreds of self-help and metaphysical tapes and CDs for his own company. Over 300 Sutphen CD titles are currently in world-wide release.

New Millenium

With the new millenium, Richard has returned to his painting roots. Presently, he is passionately pursuing one of his first loves—bold subjective abstracts in the tradition of his earlier works—acrylics on canvas—expressing man’s search for answers, meaning, enlightenment, sex, salvation. Life is a gauntlet of choices: will you or won’t you invoke the powers, tap into the energy, step through the portal?

The typical Sutphen painting is a study in contrast utilizing bright,  bold, free splashes combined with tightly rendered suns, orbs, arches, and symbolic figures. He seeks to involve the viewer in the action taking place on the canvas.

Limited edition archival Giclee prints on canvas are available on several paintings and more are planned for release.

Dicks art books have been published by Art Direction Book Company, NY, and by Sutphen Studio.

In his 1978 book, Past Lives, Future Loves (Simon & Schuster Pocket Books), Dick introduced the world to Sedona as a psychic vortex area, which in turn helped to establish the town as a New Age Mecca.

In 1976, Dick successfully created and marketed the first self-help hypnosis tapes. Over 300 of his audio/video titles are currently in world-wide release.

Dick has authored 20 metaphysics books, including seven titles for Simon & Schuster Pocket Books -- including the million-copy bestseller, You Were Born Again To Be Together.

Most of Sutphen’s eight poetry books were a co-publishing venture between Crown Publishing, New York, and his own Valley of the Sun Publishing.

His dark-fantasy fiction has been published by various genre magazines and Spine-Tingling Press. A 1990 short-story collection was nominated for a Bram Stoker award by Horror Writers of America.

In 2000, Dick began working with Nightingale - Conant, Chicago, to create three multi-tape and book albums.

Dick regularly presents workshops at the London, England and Sydney, Australia Mind Body Spirit Festivals. He is also a featured speaker at many professional conventions such as the annual American Board of Hypnotherapy gathering in Orange Country, CA, where he has been keynote speaker eight times
