Giclee Prints

Notes by Richard Sutphen

“Giclee” is a French word referring to a unique printing technology used by museums to display works of art normally kept in the basement vaults of the museum. Today, Giclee Prints are offered by many of the major art galleries in America.

A Giclee Print is the closest duplication of original artwork humanly, mechanically, or technically possible. The archival inks used to print the canvases offer a 100-year light-fastness and UV-resistance. This means a Giclee will be less likely to fade than an original.

When looking at the mounted canvas, there is no perceptible way for most people to tell that the painting isn’t an original. In fact, an art dealer recently mistakenly thought one of my prints was an original. Part of the reason for this is the way I personally “remark” each Giclee Print. This means I rebuild the texture areas so when viewed closely you’ll see paint strokes and thickness.

Editions are limited to 200, plus artist’s proofs. Each print is personally signed, numbered and reproduced on mounted canvas.

The final piece of art is framed with a “gallery strip” of natural wood (“Phoenix” and “Window to the Soul” are larger paintings and mounted on 1-1/2 inch frames with the painting wrapping around the edges, so there is no framing strip).

Website price: $495 plus shipping (the gallery price is $995). I have six different paintings currently available as Giclee Prints.
